Abstract:
This collection contains the following types of documents: correspondence, financial records, legal documents, property records, newspaper clippings and documents relating to the early Milwaukee Post Office. A vast majority of the documents contain information about Solomon Juneau. The remaining documents deal with his family and heirs.
Biographical Note:
Solomon Laurent Juneau was born on August 9, 1793 near Montreal to Francois Juneau and Theresa Gelarneau. As a fur trader, he made his first trip to Milwaukee around 1818, working for an agent of the American Fur Company. He married Josette Vieau in 1820. Solomon Juneau, one of the founders of Milwaukee, served Milwaukee as the first village president in 1837 and also as postmaster of Milwaukee. In 1852, Juneau and his family moved to Theresa, Wisconsin. He died on November 14, 1856 and was buried two weeks later in Milwaukee.
Administrative Note:
The collection was donated by more than one individual. Originals of files 36-43 are located at the Dodge County Historical Society in Beaver Dam. The collection was processed by Stephanie Ferguson in 2001. This finding aid was retyped in June 2009.
