Abstract:

This collection contains materials relating to the Holbrook Family. The majority of the papers relate to Arthur T. Holbrook and his wife Bertha Matson Andrews. Of particular note are the materials relating to his father, Arthur Holbrook, DDS, who served in the Civil War. The rest of the materials relate to other family members. The paper materials are arranged by individual. There is also a large collection of photographs, scrapbooks and postcards which are arranged by topic.

Biographical Note:

Arthur Tenney Holbrook was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin on July 12, 1870. The family moved to Milwaukee ca. 1872. After attending high school in Milwaukee, Arthur enrolled at the University of Wisconsin and stayed for two years. He then attended Harvard College, graduating in 1892. His education was continued at Rush Medical School in Chicago, and he graduated in 1895. He returned to Milwaukee and practiced there until he retired in 1946. He died May 22, 1968. Dr. Holbrook married Bertha Matson Andrews on July 29, 1903 in Lombard, Illinois. They had three sons, Arthur A., Herbert and Matson.

Dr. Arthur T. Holbrook was the son of Dr. Arthur Holbrook, a dentist, and Josephine Tenney (baptized Abbie Josephine), who were married January 2, 1868 in Waukesha. Dr. Arthur, D.D.S., was born June 4, 1842 in Madrid, NY, the son of Edwin Almus Holbrook (1817-1897), also a dentist, and Lucinda Richardson (1815-1842). He moved to Waukesha in 1860 to study destistry with his uncle, Dr. W.D. Holbrook. On September 10, 1662 Dr. Arthur, D.D.S., married Josephine Lowry, who “willfully deserted” him in 1866. They were divorced in 1867.

During the Civil War, Dr. Arthur Holbrook, D.D.S., enlisted in Co F, 5th Wisconsin Infantry. At first a Sergeant, he later became 1st Lieutenant and belonged to Co. A, 28th Wisconsin Infantry. Still later he was Adjutant of the 39 Wisconsin Infantry. He left the Army in the Fall of 1864. From 1866-1867 he attended the Philadelphia Dental College, returning to Waukesha to practice. He moved to Milwaukee ca. 1872 and died January 23, 1917.

Josephine Tenney was born August 2, 1846 in New Haven, NY, the daughter of Ebenezer Palmer Tenney (1813-1874) and Abbie Maria Heath (1820-1872), who were married November 21, 1844.

Bertha Matson Andrews was born June 8, 1874, in Chicago, the daughter of Alfred H. Andrews and Ella C. Matson, who had married in 1872. Bertha attended the Rockford Seminary and the Chicago Kindergarten College, completing the Junior Course in 1896. She was director Kindergarten and Training Teacher of the Colorado State Normal School, 1901-1902. She continued her interest in early education after her marriage, writing articles and writing and collecting ABC books. She died June 7, 1947.

Alfred Hinsdale Andrews was born in New Britain, Conn., on December 25, 1836, the son of Deacon Alfred Andrews (1797-1876) and Mary Lee Shipman (1805-1891). They came West and he carried on a school supply and book store in Chicago. Later a factory to build school furniture was added. He died June 10, 1914.

Ella Carnelia Matson was born May 13, 1851 in Oswega, NY, the daughter of Newell Matson (1815-1887) and Flora Melissa Case (1816-1903). They came to Milwaukee ca. 1860, where Newell was already a partner in Matson & Loomis, Jewelers, at 194 E Water Street. From 1865 on it was known as Newell Matson, Jewelers. Ella married A.H. Andrews February 6, 1872 and moved to Chicago and later to Lombard, Illinois. After her husband died, she spend much of her time with the Holbrooks in Milwaukee. She died November 8, 1923 and is buried in Lombard.

Administrative Info:

The collection was donated by Mrs. Arthur Holbrook in 1975, with additional materials donated in 1998. The collection was processed by Helen L. Vaeth and Patrick J. Jung in 1991 to 1992. Steve Daily added to the collection in 1999.
