Title: Carini, Stefano, Papers, 1927-1987
Call Number: Mss-1767
Bulk: 11 cubic feet

Abstract:

Collection consists of materials relating to the life and travel of Stefano Carini.  Included is correspondence, travel materials, information on Italian-American Organizations, as well as biographical data on prominent Italian Americans.  There are also materials relating to Mario Carini as well as Giovanni Carini.

Administrative Information:

This collection was donated by Mario A. Carini.  It was processed by Nicholas L. Neylon in December 1992.

Biographical Note:

Stefano Carini was born in Milwaukee on October 24, 1902, the son of Mariano and Anna (Zizzo) Carini.  The Carini Family came to America in 1896, and due to health reasons, were forced to return to their home town of Porticello in 1906.  Stefano returned to Milwaukee in 1921 and became an apprentice plasterer for John Davy.  After brief partnerships with Charles Papia and Frank DeSal, Carini formed his own company, Cream City Plastering.  This company thrived for over fifty years, and worked on many prominent Milwaukee buildings, including the Wisconsin Club, the Wells Building, the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation, the Pfister Hotel, and the Performing Arts Center.

Very active in the Milwaukee Itatlian Community, Stefano Carini was a founding member of the Italian Civic Association of Milwaukee, the  Milwaukee chapter of UNICO, the Florentine Opera Company, and the Columbus Club of Milwaukee.  A member of the Blessed Virgin of Pompeii Church, he was also heavily involved in several Italian religious organizations, including La Madonna Del Lume, Sannio, the Holy Name Society of Pompeii Church, and the Society of St. Vincent DePaul.
Stefano Carini died on July 31, 1979, and was survived by his wife and five children.

Scope and Content:

This collection contains numerous books, pamphlets and travel- related materials, most in Italian, many of which were gathered by Stefano and his wife during their travels abroad.  These items are very often specific to one Italian city, region, or historical aspect.  Information on national Italian-American organizations, and biographical data on prominent Italian-Americans can also be found.

Stefano's son Mario A. Carini, and his brother Giovanni are also represented here.  Mario A. Carini is the official historian of Milwaukee's Italian Community Center, and much of this collection reflects his involvement in I.C.C. activities, including Festa Italiana.  He has published many articles, and conducted a statistical survey related to the history of Italians in Milwaukee.  Mario has been a teacher in the Milwaukee Public Schools for many years.

Giovanni Carini was a member of the Italian Navy during World War II, and was eventually taken prisoner by the British.  He was held in prisoner of war camps in the United States, and several folders in this collection contain materials related to Stefano's search for Giovanni.
