Abstract:

The records consist of historical material, newsletters, brochures, clippings, publications, photos, slides, and videotapes that document the Boys and Girls Club’s numerous programs and activities, primarily after 1950.

Biographical Note:

Since its inception, the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee has promoted the social, educational, vocational, health, and character development of disadvantaged youth.  Annabelle Cook Whitcomb founded the Plymouth Church Boys Club in 1887.  In order that city boys could experience nature, the group also offered a summer camping program.   In 1900, the club was renamed the Boys’ Busy Life Club.

By 1924, the club had moved into new quarters at 1023 N. Jackson St. and was known as the Milwaukee Boys’ Club.  After the 1950s, the club expanded and established the Franklin Place Unit (1951), the Augusta M. LaVarnway Unit (1957), the Irving J. Seher Unit (1963), the Hillside Community Center (1978), and the Sherman Park Center (1984).  In 1984, the club extended its programs to girls and changed its name to the Milwaukee Boys & Girls Club.  Three years later, the name was changed to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee.  As of 2003, the club operates five full service clubs and 16 satellite sites and totals 24,000 members, the third largest club of its kind in the country.
