Abstract: The Wisconsin National Guard helps protect state citizens during natural or man-made emergencies, but it also has been mustered into federal service in war time.  It was formed from volunteer companies, though the “official” date of its origin is uncertain.  The Territorial legislature passed a Militia Act in 1838, and Wisconsin troops participated in the War with Mexico, 1846-1848. The State legislature codified organizational details in 1851, and since that time, WNG troops participated in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, the 1916 Mexican campaign against Pancho Villa, both World Wars, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Scope and Content: The collection consists of muster rolls, reports, publications, special orders, lists of accoutrements, ordnance and stores, and other ephemera.
