Abstract: Frederick C. Winkler was a Civil War veteran and for more than 50 years one of Milwaukee’s leading attorneys.  He was born in 1838 in Bremen, Germany, and came to the U.S. with his family in 1844.  His father, Carl Winkler, was one of the city’s pioneer druggists. Frederick studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1859.  When the Civil War broke out, Frederick organized and became captain of Company B, 26th Wisconsin Regiment.  He was promoted several times during the war, eventually brevetted brigadier general in 1865.  After the war, he returned to his law practice in Milwaukee and also became an influential figure in Wisconsin’s Republican Party. He passed away in 1921

Scope and Content: The collection contains speeches, legal documents, newspaper clippings, correspondence and genealogical materials related to Frederick Winkler.  It also includes diaries, correspondence and other material from other members of Winkler’s family as well as genealogical material related to the Price, Pendleton, Richard Smith, Pierson, Hannas and Wightman families.
