Biographical Note:

The son of Augustus and Appolonia Bruce, William George Bruce was born on March 17, 1856 in Milwaukee.  At age of 12, he had to quit school to help support his family.  Jobs at Milwaukee Daily News and the Milwaukee Sentinel led him to a career in journalism.  William founded the Bruce Publishing Co. in 1891, and his Milwaukee School Board Journal enjoyed national circulation.  Bruce was a prominent Milwaukee citizen as a result of his many activities.  He was a voice in the field of education, active in the Milwaukee Catholic Archdiocese, and served on the Milwaukee School Board.  William was also chairman of the Democratic County Committee and secretary of the Merchants and Manufacturers Association.  In addition, he wrote the 3 volume History of Milwaukee City and County.  Records include family chronicles entitled Days with Children that includes information on family events as well as local and national affairs.

Administrative Note:

The collection was processed on May 1988 by Ann Jesse.  Additions were made to the collection on Jan 14, 1997 by Janet Geronime; Sept 26, 2000 by Kevin Abing; and on March 11, 2001 by Steve Daily.  A Tribute Booklet for Bruce’s 83rd Birthday, 1939 was added on April 10, 2003 and was processed by Kevin Abing.  A Newsletter, “The Bruce Cooperator,” March 1941 (50th Anniversary of Bruce Publishing) was added on Dec.11, 2003 and was processed by Kevin Abing.
