Abstract: A native of West Virginia, Cecil Eby joined the United States Navy in August 1945 and served with the 16th fleet until his discharge in August 1946. He earned a B.A. from Shepherd College in 1950, a M.A. from Northwestern University in 1951, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1958. He was a professor of English at James Madison University (1957-1960), Washington and Lee University (1960-1965) and the University of Michigan (1965-1995). He passed away in February 2015.
Scope and Content: The collection consists of correspondence to Eby from several women, predominantly from Milwaukee, he met while stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois. The letters document, as Eby put it, “a dimension of ‘courtship’ that is largely misunderstood.” Correspondents include Audrey LeGath, Joan Hartman, Helen Mueller, Marylyn Forsyth and Leslie Klevenaw. There also is a letter from Eby to the Historical Society explaining the origin of the collection.
